Last week Nicola Jägers, Associate Professor at the Department of European and International Law, was appointed by Royal Order as a member of the national Human Rights Commission (College voor de Rechten van de Mens). From November 1st Nicola will start working for the Commission for two days a week .
The Human Rights Commission aims to strengthen the efforts to increase focus and attention of the Dutch community on human rights, to maintain that focus and attention, and to promote the protection of and compliance with these rights. The new Commission will be charged with a range of statutory duties, including: conducting research into the protection of human rights; expressing an opinion on bills, legislation, and policy that is directly or indirectly related to human rights and to provide information in the area of human rights and to encourage and coordinate education about human rights.
The establishment of a national human rights institute is required by the United Nations and hence the creation of this institute enables The Netherlands to participate fully in consultations within the UN Human Rights Council and other supervisory bodies of the UN.
The Dutch Human Rights Commission, which consists of 12 members, has been presented on the 2nd of October in Utrecht in the presence of Queen Beatrix and Ms. Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
